Secure Family Protection

How Can I Legally Protect My Family?

As a United States citizen, the Second Amendement to the Constitution provides for the right of you, an individual, to own and bear arms (firearms). Our nation had recently revolted against a tyrannical government that ruled the colonies from far across the Atlantic Ocean. This war was fought by farmers, trappers, and merchants armed with little more than a personal hunting rifle used to fell the meat for the family's meal and protect family members from savage wildlife on the American frontier.

In over 200 years since the Constitution was written and ratified by the States, our Second Amendment right hasn't changed. This right grants each and every one of us the opportunity to protect our homes, our businesses, our family members and ourselves from harm perpetrated by criminals as well as our own government bent on infringing our Constitutional rights. This is not to say that all of us should carry firearms on a daily basis but each of us as Citizens have that right.

Laws for carrying firearms vary from state to state and it is your responsibility to ascertain your rights under the laws of the state in which you reside. Some states allow armed citizens to walk about city streets without the need of a permit while other states require individuals to obtain a Concealed Carry Weapon Permit. For home security and personal safety, it may not be necessary to obtain permits in order to legally protect your family at home unless, of course, you intend to purchase a pistol. State laws are less restrictive on the purchase of shotguns and rifles.

How can you legally protect your family with firearms? Take a course in firearms safety. This is especially true if you are not familiar with guns. The course should teach you how to load, unload and clean a variety of firearms and how to handle each safely. It should also teach you the laws of the State in which you live, particularly in matters such as using deadly force in a situation that doesn't warrant it. Consider having members of your family take the course with you - your spouse and children. It is especially important for children (adolescents and teenagers) to understand the rules of gun safety as well as learn the responsibility of gun ownership.

Next, decide which kind of firearm is right for you. Many instructors will tell you that a pistol is best for personal safety whereas a shotgun provides the best home protection. The decision, the purchase and the responsibility is ultimately yours.
